3 Questions to Ask When Assessing Your Business Progress This Summer

There’s nothing special about summer when you’re a business owner. Now, hear me out: people who work for someone else look forward to weekends and vacations. For business owners, a week never ends – it’s just a perpetual string of time because you’re always working. Sunshine and double-digit temperatures don’t change that! With that said, now is an exciting time to assess our progress towards our goals because we tend to meter our time in terms of a calendar year. In the summer, you can figure out where you’re going in the next six months by taking stock of where you’ve been over the last six.

Here are three questions you can ask yourself when you’re trying to determine how much progress you’ve made towards achieving your business goals:

  1. Am I where I thought I would be?

When you set out your goals at the beginning of the year, hopefully you planned how you were going to achieve them. If you didn’t, now is the time to outline exactly what you need to get to that end point.

This isn’t a question to be afraid of. An honest answer will only help you and your business.

  1. What would I have done differently?

Even if you’re on track for meeting your goals, maybe there was a more efficient path you could have taken. There is an excellent book by Marshall Goldsmith titled What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. It’s a perfect aphorism for explaining why you need to ask yourself this question at every point in your entrepreneurial journey.

Stagnation, complacency, and an unwillingness to grow – these are the sure pathways to falling behind the competition.

  1. What do I need to get to where I want to be?

Figure out what your company needs for you to take it to new heights. Then take a good, hard look in the mirror and ask yourself if you have it. If the answer is no, you are obligated to get it. Buy it. Arrange for it. Study it.
